Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley Says Rex Tillerson & John Kelly Asked Her To Undermine Trump

Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley has written in her soon-to-be-published memoir With All Due Respect that former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and former White House chief of staff John Kelly tried to convince her to undermine President Donald Trump in order to “save the country.”

The book will be released Tuesday, but the Washington Post obtained a copy early.

“Kelly and Tillerson confided in me that when they resisted the President, they weren’t being insubordinate, they were trying to save the country,” Haley wrote.

Haley wrote that she refused to join the pair in their efforts.

In an interview that aired Sunday on CBS Sunday Morning, Haley called Tillerson and Kelly’s attempt to undermine the president “offensive.”

“It should have been, go tell the President what your differences are and quit if you don’t like what he’s doing,” Haley said. “To undermine a President is really a very dangerous thing. And it goes against the Constitution and it goes against what the American people want. It was offensive.”

Trump tweeted an endorsement of the book and wished Haley luck.

“Make sure you order your copy today, or stop by one of her book tour stops to get a copy and say hello,” he wrote. “Good luck Nikki!”

While the book largely praised Trump, Haley made it clear she wanted to disassociate that certain tendencies and things he did.

She said she was “very uncomfortable” about Trump’s news conference in Helsinki, in which he sided with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the U.S. intelligence community about Russian interference in the 2016 election. NPR reported that she spoke to the president about it and that he “soon issued additional remarks.”

She also faults him for having “equivocated” at times, including after the racist violence at the United the Right rally in Charlottesville.

On the issue of impeachment, Haley strongly opposes removing the president. However she told the Post that she thought asking a foreign government to open a political investigation was wrong.
