The plot to overturn the election result in 2020 took center stage in the Utah Senate debate on Monday, as Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) was attacked by his independent challenger Evan McMullin over his role in trying to keep Donald Trump in the presidency.
In one viral video, McMulling brought up the fact that Lee texted Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows advocating for attorney Sidney Powell’s strategy to challenge the results, which would prove to be based on false allegations.
“You said the president should listen to legal quack Sidney Powell,” McMullin said. “‘Please make time for her, let her in,’ you told the White House Chief of Staff.”
“You were there to stand up for our Constitution but when the barbarians were at the gate, you were happy to let them in,” he added.

Lee did text Meadows pushing for the White House to embrace Powell as a legal advisor for Trump, calling the attorney a “straight-shooter,” pushing for exploiting potential legal loophole to overturn the election results.
But later, when Powell made wild claims about a foreign rigging of voting machines, he raised issues about the attorney, saying she was a “potential defamation liability” for Trump. The senator ultimately voted to certify President Joe Biden as the winner in 2020.
During the debate, the senator denied the allegations.
“There’s absolutely nothing to the idea that I ever did support fake electors,” Lee said. “Nothing. Not a scintilla of evidence suggesting that. And yet you continue to insist that with a cavalier, reckless, disregard for the truth.”
