Eight Million Apply For Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Program In First Two Days

President Joe Biden formally launched the online system to apply for student loan forgiveness, which should offer relief to up to 43 million Americans.

“Today, I’m announcing millions of people working and middle-class folks can apply and get this relief. And it’s simple and it’s now. It’s easy,” Biden said in a White House press conference alongside Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. “This is a game changer for millions of Americans … and it took an incredible amount of effort to get this website done in such a short time.”

According to the plan, announced in August, those who make up to $125,000 a year can obtain up to $10,000 in debt relief. Pell Grants recipients are eligible for up to $20,000 in forgiveness. The application form can be filled out at StudentAid.Gov.

The official launch came after a beta version of the system was released on Friday. Biden said that over eight million users filled out their applications over the weekend.

“As millions of people fill out the application, we’re going to make sure the system continues to work as smoothly as possible so that we can deliver student loan relief for millions of Americans as quickly and as efficiently as possible,” the president added.
