Elizabeth Warrens Dances After Receiving ‘Des Moines Register’ Endorsement

Iowa’s largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, endorsed Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) in the Democratic primary.

Polls released heading into the final week before the Iowa caucuses showed Warren trailing behind Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), former Vice President Joe Biden and former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg in both Iowa and New Hampshire — two critical early-voting states.

Historically, an endorsement from the paper provided a 3-4 boost in the polls.

A video posted on Twitter on Sunday captured Warren’s excitement after hearing the news.

The editorial board of the paper championed Warren’s anti-corruption platform, noting that she is a capitalist.

“The senior U.S. senator from Massachusetts is not the radical some perceive her to be,” reads the endorsement. “She was a registered Republican until 1996. She is a capitalist.”

It continued, “But she wants fair markets, with rules and accountability. She wants a government that works for people, not one corrupted by cash.”

The paper also said a gradual transition to a single-payer healthcare system is better than a sudden overhaul, but acknowledged she was on the right track.

While she has not mentioned the endorsement, she has been campaigning as frequently as the Senate trial schedule allows.

When asked why uncommitted Democrats should support her instead of Sanders or the other frontrunners during a town hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she emphasized her record of beating an incumbent Republican.

“Let me tell you why I think you should caucus for me: I know how to fight, and I know how to win,” Warren said. “In fact, I’m the only person in this race who has beaten an incumbent Republican anytime in the last 30 years.”
