Donald Trump managed to avoid serving in the Vietnam War. His bone spurs diagnosis was his fifth and final deferment and, speaking with The New York Times in 2016, Trump spoke of the “very strong letter on the heels” his doctor handed him in 1968. However, significant details concerning the documentation, such as the identity of the doctor who signed off on it, have never been elaborated on by Trump.
A story published on Wednesday by The New York Times might provide clarification regarding Trump’s diagnosis. Dr. Larry Braunstein, who passed away in 2007, was a podiatrist whose Queens office was rented from Trump’s father, Fred Trump.
Braunstein was survived by two daughters. Speaking with the Times, they explained how the diagnosis of Trump’s bone spurs was merely a favor their father did for Trump. Dr. Elysa Braunstein, 56, and Sharon Kessel, 53, discussed the insinuation from their father that the then-22-year-old Trump’s foot condition was fabricated. “I know it was a favor,” Braunstein told the Times. “But did he examine him? I don’t know.”

Braunstein continued, explaining her father was often aided by the elder Trump when something went awry in his building. “What he got was access to Fred Trump. If there was anything wrong in the building, my dad would call and Trump would take care of it immediately. That was the small favor that he got.” Allegedly, a second podiatrist – the late Dr. Manny Weinstein, who resided in two apartments the Trump family owned – was involved as well.
No records or physical evidence verifying the sisters’ account has been discovered. The family admitted their father never left any medical documentations with them, and the doctor who later acquired Braunstein’s practice does not have any of Trump’s records either. Similarly, the government has retained few records from the Vietnam War draft.
