President Donald Trump posted an early-morning tweet Tuesday wondering “what is taking so long” for the Justice Department to release its report about the FBI’s probe into Hillary Clinton’s email server.

Trump is sure to continue to refer to Clinton as “Crooked Hillary” in his tweet, despite the fact that the White House has stood by the claim that James Comey was fired from his position of FBI director for his handling of Clinton’s investigation.

Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz is expected to soon release a report that will most likely find fault with Comey’s decisions regarding Clinton’s case, such as holding a news conference to announce his recommendation against criminal charges for Clinton and announcing just days before the 2016 presidential election that the FBI will be reopening the investigation. Many still believe that Comey damaged Clinton’s election prospects through his actions.

Rather than vindicating Democrats who believe Clinton was treated unfairly, the White House seems to be hoping the report will damage Comey’s reputation and, by extension, the credibility of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Any damaging findings surrounding Comey and the FBI would allow Trump to further attack other federal investigators, especially Mueller and his investigation into Russian meddling and collusion in the 2016 election.
Trump decries the investigation as a “Witch Hunt Hoax” on a daily basis, but using independent criticisms of Comey would undoubtedly give the president a boost.
Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney, is hopeful that the report will be damaging to Comey.
“This will be the final nail in his coffin,” Giuliani told reporters. “This guy has already proven to be a leaker and liar and we believe the report is going to make that plain.”
