Donald Trump Says He’s “Never Been A Fan” Of John McCain

President Donald Trump published a series of tweets last week lambasting the late Sen. John McCain, critiquing him for “spreading the fake and totally discredited Dossier.” On Tuesday, Trump reiterated his dislike for McCain, who died last August after a long battle with brain cancer, saying he “was never a fan” of his former colleague.

Speaking at the White House along with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Trump maintained his criticism of the Vietnam veteran. Trump cited McCain’s 2017 vote against repealing parts of Obamacare to be “disgraceful,” adding how he was “very unhappy that [McCain]  didn’t repeal and replace Obamacare.”

“They got to a vote, and he said thumbs down,” Trump said. “I think that’s disgraceful.” However, that vote isn’t the only act Trump holds against the former senator. “There are other things. I was never a fan of John McCain and I never will be.”

One of McCain’s close friends, Mark Salter, took to Twitter to defend him, writing how Trump’s character is well beneath McCain’s. Meghan McCain, John McCain’s daughter, also defended her father.

Trump had a contentious relationship with McCain for years. During his presidential campaign, Trump said McCain isn’t a true war. “He’s not a war hero,” Trump said in 2015. “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured, ok?”
