Greenland
President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce he will be postponing his meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The post came after Denmark said their territory of Greenland was not for sale. The post read:
“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks.”
He added that he wanted to thank Frederikson for “being direct” in telling him Greenland was not for sale. On Wednesday, the president went further and said that Frederiksen’s comments were “nasty.”

Trump was to visit Denmark during a trip to Europe.
In response to reports that Trump wanted the island, Frederiksen reaffirmed Danish Premier Kim Kielsen’s statement that the U.S. could not buy Greenland. She added, “that’s where the conversation ends.”
Greenland’s Foreign Ministry also responded to Trump via Twitter saying that Greenland is full of natural resources and it is “open for business, not for sale.”
The sudden change in Trump’s plans adds to the strangeness of the event. After news of his idea broke, the president tried to make a joke of it by tweeting a picture of a Trump tower in Greenland saying, “I promise not to do this to Greenland!” He told reporters that his planned meeting did not relate to his desire to own the giant island.
The U.S. ambassador to Denmark tweeted, “Denmark is ready for the POTUS @realDonaldTrump visit! Partner, ally, friend,” just hours before the President made his announcement.
