Donald Trump Calls Jewish Democrats ‘Disloyal’ Using Anti-Semitic Trope

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump told Jewish Democrats that they show “total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.”

Trump told White House press correspondents, “I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat — it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty,” in response to Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota) and Rashida Talib (D-Michigan) calling for an end to the support of the country over its occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Trump critics were quick to pounce on this latest provocative statement. The executive director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, Halie Soifer, said, “If this is about Israel, then Trump is repeating a dual loyalty claim, which is a form of anti-Semitism. If this is about Jews being ‘loyal’ to him, then Trump needs a reality check.”

Others are calling his comments dangerous. Trump has previously suggested that Jewish Americans, who have historically been strong supporters of the Democratic party, are turning Republican.

However, the 2018 midterm election shows otherwise. During that election, Jewish Americans voted Democratic by a margin of 3 to 1.

The Republican Jewish Coalition tweeted,President Trump is right, it shows a great deal of disloyalty to oneself to defend a party that protects/emboldens people that hate you for your religion.”

Trump also took to Twitter to attack Talib for making an emotional statement about having to go through “dehumanizing” checkpoints to visit family in Palestine.
