Donald Trump Gives North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un A “Rocket Man” CD

On Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo travelled to North Korea bearing a personalized gift for leader Kim Jong-un — an Elton John CD with the song “Rocket Man” on it reported South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper.

The song serves as a comedic memento, referencing past instances when President Donald Trump would mock Kim via Twitter by referring to him as “Little Rocket Man,” following a series of nuclear tests and missile launches by the North.

According to Chosun Ilbo, a diplomatic source in Washington said the label stuck with the North Korean leader who later brought it up during Trump’s lunch with Kim. “Kim mentioned that Trump referred to him as ‘rocket man’ when tensions ran high last year. Trump then asked Kim if he knew the song and Kim said no.”

The gift marks the degree to which tensions between the two leaders have thawed within the past year. Just last year, the two leaders had engaged in a public feud, with Trump threatening “fire and fury,” while the North Korean state media claimed that Trump was “bereft of reason and [that] only absolute force can work on him.”

Following a historic summit on nuclear disarmament between the two countries, Pompeo now heads to North Korea to iron out details concerning the agreement made between the two countries. The secretary of state is expected to discuss North Korea’s commitments to return the remains of fallen American soldiers from the Korean War and to destroy one of their missile test engine sites located in Ch’olsan County, North Pyongan province.

“On this trip, I’m seeking to fill in some details on those commitments and continue the momentum toward implementation of what the two leaders promised each other and the world,” said Pompeo. “I expect that the DPRK is ready to do the same.”
