President Donald Trump is considering firing Chief of Staff John Kelly and serving as both President and his own Chief of Staff, NBC News has reported.
People familiar with the discussions said Trump is considering a system in which aides report directly to him rather than go through the Chief of Staff, as per tradition. They also said the idea appealed to Trump because of its similarity to the way employees report to the CEOs of a business.
An anonymous source told NBC, it wouldn’t be too different from the way things already run.
“Donald Trump is the chief of staff,” the source said. “He already calls the shots.”

Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist, seems to believe the idea is feasible.

“I’ve actually argued that if General Kelly at any time does decide to leave — [or] the president decides it’s time for him to move on — I don’t believe there will be another chief of staff,” Bannon said at a Financial Times Forum. “I think there will be five or six direct reports like there was in Trump Tower.”
Kelly is the second Chief of Staff under Trump’s Administration, as Reince Priebus resigned last June. If he’s fired, Trump will be the first President without a Chief of Staff since Harry Truman’s administration created the post for John Steelman.
