Donald Trump Claims At Florida Rally That Americans Need ID To Go Grocery Shopping

President Donald Trump claimed at a rally in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday night that Americans need identification to go grocery shopping.

“You know, if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card, you need ID,” Trump said. “You go out and you want to buy anything, you need ID and you need your picture.”

Trump made the comments while arguing in favor of stricter ID checks for voting. Trump’s claim is  false, as ID is typically required only for alcohol purchases at U.S. supermarkets.

The president continued speaking about the issue: “In this country, the only time you don’t need it in many cases is when you want to vote for a president, when you want to vote for a senator, when you want to vote for a governor or a congressman.”

SLIDESHOW: DONALD TRUMP’S 30 CRAZIEST TWEETS

Trump appeared at the rally in support of right-wing GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis’ campaign for governor.

Jim Acosta, a CNN journalist hated by the White House and by many Trump supporters, attended Tuesday’s rally and tweeted about the president’s remarks:

“Trump out of touch here… you don’t need an ID to buy groceries,” Acosta wrote.

Acosta then shared a video of Trump voters yelling disparaging comments toward him and lamented the latest attacks on the press.

During a news conference at the White House on Wednesday, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: “Certainly if you go to a grocery store and you buy beer and wine you’re going to show your ID.”

Many studies in recent years have shown that voter fraud is an extremely rare occurrence and that tougher voter ID laws tend to disproportionately hurt lower-income Americans, especially minorities.

Among the other issues Trump discussed at Tuesday’s rally were the construction of the southern border wall and a recent poll about his popularity among Republicans.
