Democrat Andrew Gillum is running against Ron DeSantis in a heated gubernatorial race, hoping to become the first African American governor in Florida’s history. Now, President Donald Trump has called Gillum in an interview as a “thief,” and Gillum has responded to Trump’s comments.
On a Monday interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Trump addressed the Tallahassee mayor as a “stone-cold thief” without citing any evidence to warrant such a label. Notably, an FBI investigation regarding Tallahassee city government is ongoing, though Gillum is not a target of the investigation. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders asserted Trump’s accusation against Gillum was in reference to him being under investigation. However, there is no evidence that Gillum himself is under investigation, nor has he been convicted of any crimes.
Gillum is also under scrutiny for accepting tickets to see Hamilton from an undercover FBI agent, although his campaign insists Gillum did nothing illegal.
