Donald Trump
In a series of tweets on Tuesday, President Donald Trump accused the tech giant Google of “suppressing the voices of conservatives,” accusing Google is “rigged” to show only “bad” stories and “fake news.”
It appears that Trump got inspired by a report on Fox Business Network, that highlighted an unscientific study in which 96% of Google search results for the word “Trump” were articles from “left-leaning sites,” like the New York Times. Google’s search results, however, are determined by an algorithm that scores websites based on their relevancy for a particular search word.
“Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology,” Google said in a statement. “Every year, we issue hundreds of improvements to our algorithms to ensure they surface high-quality content in response to users’ queries. We continue work to improve Google Search and we never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment.”
