Cory Booker Slams Donald Trump For His Attacks On The Media: “Those Are Things That Dictators Have Said”

Democrat Sen. Cory Booker slammed President Donald Trump‘s repeating attacks of the media, calling his behavior “moral vandalism” and an “assault on the basic ideals of democracy.”

In an interview at Netroots Nation, the progressive conference being held in New Orleans, Booker spoke out about White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ refusal to denounce Trump’s rhetoric.

“Just yet another example of the moral vandalism of this president,” Booker said. “He continues to assault basic ideals of democracy. Those are things that dictators have said. It’s just really hurtful, I think, to anyone who believes in the fundamental freedoms of this country.”

Trump has used Twitter to verbally assault reporters, even athletes, and he often calls the media the “enemy of the people.” He also regularly refers to reputable news outlets like CNN and the New York Times as “fake news.”

Booker often is discussed as a possible Democratic contender for president in 2020. At the left-wing Netroots Nation annual conference, Booker hold an impassioned speech, warning America that something has gone “savagely wrong.”

“I’m a big believer that if America, if this country hasn’t broken your heart, then you don’t love her enough. Because there’s things that are savagely wrong in this country,” he said.

Recently Trump tweeted about Booker, attacking him for his words about Trump’s immigrant policy. Trump said he knows “more about Cory” than the senator himself.

Bookers responded on CNN, saying that he loves Trump. “I don’t care, I love you Donald. I pray for you . . . I just don’t want him to be my president. I don’t want you to have the White House to be spewing that kind of mean-spirited hate that doesn’t even belong in a playground sandbox,” he said.
