Columnist Robert Kagan Warns That Trump Threatens U.S. Democracy

Robert Kagan, a columnist from Washington Post, released an op-ed on Thursday warning American voters that former President Donald Trump will indeed run for president in 2024.

“Donald Trump will be the Republican candidate for president in 2024,” the columnist wrote in his op-ed. “The hope and expectation that he would fade in visibility and influence have been delusional. He enjoys mammoth leads in the polls; he is building a massive campaign war chest; and at this moment the Democratic ticket looks vulnerable. Barring health problems, he is running.”

Kagan also warned the American voters that they should start worrying about the constitutional order. The foundation of U.S. democracy has been threatened by the former president several times, including the January 6 riot caused by Trump’s false election fraud claims.

“All that prevented it was a handful of state officials with notable courage and integrity, and the reluctance of two attorneys general and a vice president to obey orders they deemed inappropriate,” he wrote. “These were not the checks and balances the Framers had in mind when they designed the Constitution, of course, but Trump has exposed the inadequacy of those protections.”

Trump has been suggesting to the media that he is considering a rematch with President Joe Biden in 2024.

“It’s not that I want to,” Trump said in July speaking with Fox’s Sean Hannity, hinting that he is considering another run. “The country needs it. We have to take care of this country. I don’t want to, is this fun? Fighting constantly? Fighting always? I mean, the country, what we have done is so important.”

Trump has also reportedly started to search for his potential vice presidential running mate. His former vice president, Mike Pence, will not be considered to be his running mate again – he is reportedly preparing his own presidential campaign.
