Cheney Warns Fellow Republicans On Trump Support: ‘Your Dishonor Will Remain’
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), the vice-chair of the House select committee that has been investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack for the past 11 months, warned her Republican colleagues to be mindful of which side they stand on in supporting former President Donald Trump‘s involvement in the riots and rigged election claims.
“I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: there will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain,” Cheney said at the committee’s first public hearing on Thursday night.

Cheney was one of the few Republicans to publically criticize Trump and vote to impeach him following the Capitol attack. She’s been politically punished for her outspokenness, including being removed from her GOP leadership position by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) last year. She and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) are the only Republicans serving on the January 6 committee.
The committee’s televised public hearings will likely continue through July, in an effort to lay out the information it has gathered through conducting over a thousand interviews and reviewing around 140,000 documents.
The first hearing made it clear that the committee believes Trump was responsible for inciting the violence that took place during the Capitol breach. The committee does not have the power to indict Trump or his allies but does have the power of swaying public perception.
Cheney offered a glimpse into upcoming hearings, including sharing clips of testimonies with Trump advisers and specifically his adviser and daughter Ivanka Trump.
Cheney will face Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman (R) in Wyoming’s August 16 primary in her quest for reelection.
