Peter Thiel, a billionaire Republican donor, said he was dissatisfied with former President Donald Trump‘s presidency. He stated that Trump’s administration failed to fulfill even his “low expectations.”
In an interview with Barton Gellman of The Atlantic, Thiel, who is the co-founder of PayPal, stated that he hoped that voting for Trump would bring about improvements in the country but ultimately felt disillusioned and let down.
He compared voting for Trump to a plea for assistance that had not been well articulated.
“There are a lot of things I got wrong. It was crazier than I thought. It was more dangerous than I thought. They couldn’t get the most basic pieces of the government to work. So that was—I think that part was maybe worse than even my low expectations,” he said.

Thiel, who provided financial support to Trump during the 2016 election, stated that the former president contacted him recently to express disappointment since Thiel refused to contribute any funds to his campaign during the current election cycle. Trump also reportedly told Thiel that he had higher expectations of him.
Thiel mentioned that his mind could still be swayed, but added that conversing with Gellman might solidify his decision.
Thiel acknowledged that his husband does not approve of further political contributions – and he agrees.
“I know they’re going to be pestering me like crazy. And by talking to you, it’s going to lock me out of the cycle for 2024,” Thiel said.
