President Joe Biden is set to unveil his administration’s new gun regulation plan today in the wake of mass shootings in Georgia, Colorado and California. Biden is expected to focus on existing loopholes in gun regulations that allow people to obtain guns quicker than usually possible as well as loopholes subverting background checks.
“The president will not wait for Congress to act before the administration takes our own steps — solely within the administration’s authority and the Second Amendment — to save lives,” a Biden spokesperson said in a press conference Wednesday night.
The president is expected to crack down on ‘ghost guns,’ weapons made by hand or without serial numbers, that allow buyers to avoid background checks. Biden is also likely to enhance regulation on concealed assault-style firearms; one such weapon was used in the Colorado supermarket shooting.
In anticipation of his new gun regulations, Biden nominated David Chipman as the new director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Chipman is a senior policy advisor at Giffords, a group working to modernize gun regulations. If confirmed, Chipman would be the first director in eight years for the agency.
