On Wednesday, the Biden administration released a blueprint for renewable energy as it pledged to replace almost half of the nation’s electricity with solar power by 2050.
The Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory published a statement of its finding that reaching the Biden administration’s green energy goals would require replacing solar power with at least 37 percent of entire energy production by 2035 and then to 44 percent by 2050.
“The study illuminates the fact that solar, our cheapest and fastest-growing source of clean energy, could produce enough electricity to power all of the homes in the U.S. by 2035 and employ as many as 1.5 million people in the process,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. “Achieving this bright future requires a massive and equitable deployment of renewable energy and strong decarbonization policies – exactly what is laid out in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda.”
The study comes as extreme weather disasters, such as the recent Hurricane Ida, are increasing in frequency due to accelerating climate change.
