Biden Says New Intel Reports Show Russian Effort To Influence 2022 Election

The Biden administration has been receiving regular intelligence updates on Russia’s recent effort to intervene in U.S. elections. The current and former officials have said that these efforts by Russia are evolving and ongoing, even though President Joe Biden had previously warned Russian President Vladimir Putin during their summit in May.

U.S. experts say that the Russian government has attempted to manipulate tensions in the U.S. over COVID-19-related topics like masks and vaccines in its most recent effort. Biden administration has taken a strong stance on Russia’s interference with U.S. domestic affairs.

In April, the Department of Treasury sanctioned 32 Russian groups and individuals who were part of a calculated scheme to manipulate the 2020 presidential election by spreading false information about Biden during his presidential run.

During the Geneva summit in June, Biden warned Putin about Russia’s malicious cyberattacks, saying that it was a “pure violation of our sovereignty.”

“We’ll find out within the next six months to a year whether or not we actually have a strategic dialogue that matters,” Biden said during the meeting. “We’ll find out whether we have a cybersecurity arrangement that begins to bring some order.”

From 2017 to 2019, Russia’s interference in the 2016 election was investigated in the U.S. Justice Department by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
