President Joe Biden made light of his adversaries and himself at Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He was the first President in six years to attend the annual dinner.
“I’m really excited to be here tonight with the only group of Americans with a lower approval rating than I have,” Biden joked to the crowd of Washington political figures, journalists and celebrities.
“We had a horrible plague followed by two years of Covid,” he added. “Just imagine if my predecessor came to this dinner this year, now that would really have been a real coup if that occurred.”
Former President Donald Trump opted out of the dinner during his administration, and the event was canceled the past two years due to the pandemic.

Biden also took a jab at the GOP and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who has made headlines recently for audio recordings where he privately opposed Trump and other members of his own party.
“There’s nothing I can say about the GOP that Kevin McCarthy hasn’t already put on tape,” Biden quipped.
There was also concern about the COVID-19 spike in Washington surrounding the evening after some of Biden’s cabinet officials tested positive for the virus after attending the Gridiron Dinner at the beginning of April. Biden took the opportunity to roast Fox News.
“I know there are a lot of questions about whether we should gather here tonight because of COVID. Well, we’re here to show the country that we’re getting through this pandemic. Plus, everyone has to prove they are fully vaccinated and boosted,” Biden said. “Just contact your favorite Fox News reporter. They’re all here. Vaccinated and boosted.”
