WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 05: U.S. President Donald Trump shushes journalists before signing the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act in the Rose Garden at the White House June 05, 2020 in Washington, DC. In the midst of nationwide protests against the death of George Floyd, the U.S. Labor Department announced the unemployment rate fell to 13.3 percent in May, a surprising improvement in the nation’s job market as hiring rebounded faster than economists expected in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. On Thursday, a federal appeals court temporarily blocked the release of former President Donald Trump‘s White House records from National Archives to Jan. 6 committee investigators. The committee wants to know about the extent of Trump’s involvement in planning the events of Jan. 6.
Earlier this week, Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected the former president’s request to block the release, calling it “defective” and “premature,” but the appeals court issued a stay of the order on Thursday night.
Chutkan is also considering an earlier request made by Trump to prevent the House Taxation Committee from accessing his White House records. The request cites the former president’s claim to executive privilege.
Trump’s attorney, Jesse Binnall, issued a statement about the matter: “This case should be decided after thorough but expeditious consideration pursuant to America’s judicial review process, both before this Court and on appeal, not by a race against the clock.”
