After Elon Musk announced plans to create a third political party, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has been in contact with former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang about forming a new party.

Musk previously had a close relationship with President Donald Trump before they had a highly publicized fallout earlier this year. Musk donated $250 million to the president’s 2024 campaign. Following Trump’s reelection, he was appointed head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). As the head of DOGE, Musk spearheaded mass firings of government workers and dissolved many agencies.

Musk and Trump’s fallout was mainly due to the administration’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” and the massive deficit increase that will result from it.

Yang was a contender for the 2020 presidential election and founded the Forward Party, an independent party, in 2021.

“I’m excited for anyone who wants to move on from the duopoly, and I’m happy to help give someone a sense of what the path looks like,” he said.

During Yang’s 2020 presidential campaign, Musk endorsed Yang.

In June, Yang had said that he had contacted Musk about creating a joint third political party: “People have come to the Forward Party from all different walks of life and different ideologies. Elon has a very, very significant following and megaphone, and you can see that with the number of people who have voted on his post about starting a third party. It’s about 5.3 million votes, with 81 percent saying yes, it is time to create a new political party.”
