4 More Democrats Come Out In Support Of Trump Impeachment After Mueller’s Testimony

The day after Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony four more Democrats have come out in favor of the impeachment of President Donald Trump. 

The four Representatives are: Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon), Rep. Lisa Blunt (D-Delaware) and Rep.. Katherine Clark (D-Massachusetts) and Rep. Lori Trahan (D-Massachusetts). 

The addition of these Representatives marks nearly 100 House Democrats have come out in support of impeachment. Many Democrats had hopes the testimony would cause a mass number of officials to change their views on impeachment, but ultimately did not.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been criticized by some of her colleagues for not moving quickly enough toward impeachment. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-California) voiced his opinion that he is not “convinced” the country should be put through the long process of impeachment.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California) feels that more Democrats will soon come out after watching Mueller testify, “you’re not going to see fewer people calling for impeachment.” 

Trahan said that she had already read the whole report but after seeing Mueller on Wednesday she felt there was enough of a case to start impeachment process. She said it is important that people see Mueller testify “because you want impeachment proceedings to be self evident,” adding that “you want… people understand what you’re doing is not a partisan thing.”

Trahan is very familiar with the process of Impeachment. Her first term in 1998 was as a Congressional staffer during the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton. She said impeachment creates a “tremendous burden on history,” but that “we need to send a very clear and strong message that no president is above the law.”

Clark’s decision came as more of a surprise as she is a leader among the House Democrats. She said she felt a compulsion to do more to fight the Trump administration’s “obstruction.” 

Like many of her fellow Democrats she said she was shocked when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked the issue of election security from being discussed on the Senate floor. She said that “we must be relentless in protect[ing] our national security, and ensure that every eligible American can vote without foreign interference.”

Last week, Mueller refused to answer Rep. Mike Johnson’s (R-Louisiana) question about impeachment.
