Days before former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial was set to begin, his lead lawyer Butch Bowers, has left his legal team. Bowers was set to have a major role in Trump’s legal defense.
Bowers along with Deborah Bardier, another Trump lawyer, have announced that their resignation was a “mutual decision.” New lawyers set to represent Trump will be announced in the coming days. A third Trump lawyer, Josh Howard, separately announced that he would be leaving the team before trial.
Bowers’ appointment to Trump’s legal team was celebrated by the former president and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina). Bowers is a South Carolinian with extensive election law experience who has previously represented former Republican South Carolina Govs. Mark Sanford and Nikki Haley.
Since the lawyer exodus, Trump spokesperson Jason Miller addressed the news. “The Democrats’ efforts to impeach a president who has already left office is totally unconstitutional and so bad for our country,” Miller said. “In fact, 45 Senators have already voted that it is unconstitutional. We have done much work, but have not made a final decision on our legal team, which will be made shortly.”
