Democrats Deliver GOP Ultimatum Over Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene: Remove From Committees Or We Will

Democrats are moving to force Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) off of multiple House committees this week. Last week, Greene was officially awarded seats on the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Budget Committee.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has delivered an ultimatum to Kevin McCarthy: Either Republicans move on their own to strip Greene of her committee assignments within 72 hours, or Democrats will bring issue to the House floor.

The Democrats’ concern over Greene stemmed from her record of proclaiming the deadly mass shootings in Parkland, Florida were staged and endorsing violence against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats before being elected to Congress.

A formal censure and expulsion from the House are two of the most severe sanctions that can be taken against a member of Congress, but removal from committees would be an easier lift for Democrats.

“Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene must be held accountable for her reprehensible statements, and I am discussing with members the best course of action to do so,” Hoyer said.

In response to the Democrats’ concern, Republicans have been slow to act. McCarthy so far has said that he is planning only to have a “conversation” with Green about the controversies.

Greene has shown no remorse for her past actions, tweeting over the weekend that she will “never apologize.”

Many Democrats have said they do no expect McCarthy to take action and, as a result, have been preparing their own options.

“If we are waiting for Kevin McCarthy to have a moral compass… that’s never going to happen,” Rep. Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.), who represents the site of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, told reporters Monday as she demanded Greene’s committee positions be stripped from her.

Hayes said Greene has “forfeited her right” to participate in a House panel, particularly the Education Committee. “Her elevation in the party is dangerous.”
