Robert Mueller, the special counsel in the Russia investigation, also recently accused Manafort of witness tampering. Mueller is now looking into ties between Trump’s former campaign manager and Deripaska, one of several Russian oligarchs the U.S. sanctioned in April.
According to multiple reports, Kilimnik served as an intermediary between Deripaska and Manafort. Kilimnik is believed by prosecutors to be linked to Russian intelligence agencies, but he has denied these allegations.
Manafort has also been charged with bank fraud and money laundering, among other things. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial in Virginia is set to begin next month. Manafort is also slated to appear in court in Washington in September.
Mueller is also reportedly seeking to determine Manafort’s involvement in an infamous meeting at Trump Tower in June 2016, which Donald Trump Jr. and other members of the Trump presidential campaign also attended. At that meeting, a Russian lawyer who worked for the Kremlin reportedly promised Trump’s eldest son damaging information about Hillary Clinton, just months before the election. The Senate Judiciary Committee released full transcripts from that meeting last month after Donald Trump Jr. was interrogated by lawmakers. Other issues, like American families adopting Russian children, were also allegedly discussed at this encounter at Trump Tower.
