Demonstrators rallied in lower Manhattan on Monday, to call for the release of activist Mahmoud Khalil, who was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement over the weekend. Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student of Palestinian descent who was a leader in the pro-Palestine movement at the university, was arrested on Sunday, according to the Department of Homeland Security, which said the arrest was carried out “in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism.” In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump accused Khalil of being “a Radical Foreign Pro-Hamas Student,” and said “this is the first arrest of many to come.” Khalil’s lawyer said he was arrested despite having a green card. Khalil has reportedly been moved to a detention facility in Louisiana. (Credit: Brendan Rose via Storyful)
