Italian police have arrested 181 suspects in a major anti-mafia operation conducted in Palermo, Sicily. Italy’s Carabinieri police force said those arrested were accused of attempted murder, extortion aggravated by methods employed by the mafia, aiding and abetting, weapons offenses, crimes against property, illegal gambling, and other crimes. They also said that already-detained mafia bosses were able to conduct operations from prison using encrypted mobile phones. “Organized crime is in trouble, the fight against the mafia has not stopped and will not stop,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X, praising the operation.
