Columbia student activist Mohsen Mahdawi was released from federal custody in Vermont on April 30, following a judge’s order, ending weeks of detention. Mahdawi, a Palestinian and US green-card holder, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on April 14 in Colchester, Vermont, during a naturalization interview, despite no charges being filed against him. Mahdawi was in the process of applying for citizenship at the time of his arrest. He had also participated in pro-Palestinian protests on Columbia University’s campus.
