Self-help author Marianne Williamson, who is running for president in 2020 as a Democrat, wants to foster a deep conversation about what led the United States to its currently divided state under President Donald Trump.

“I’m not trying to differentiate myself from the field but I am having a conversation about where America is and where we need to go, particularly politically, that is different” said Williamson. “I think that there’s a 21st-century whole person perspective that has permeated every single aspect of American culture except politics. Politics is still an overly externalized conversation.”

Williamson explained she believes that this habit of over-externalizing issues and how we relate to the is what led us as Americans to the current socio-political climate. She also called for inclusion of “emotional” and “psychological” insight with respect to our reflection and decision-making processes as voters.

“Not recognizing and therefore not factoring in these elements doesn’t have the deep perspicacity that is necessary to lead us out of the ditch that we are now in,” she said.
