VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate Marianne Williamson On Improving The U.S. Economy

The U.S. economy under President Donald Trump has been strong in recent months, although there has been concern among many pundits that a recession could occur as the 2020 election draws closer.

Self-help author Marianne Williamsona 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, spoke to uPolitics exclusively about her plan to improve the state of the economy. She said one of her top priorities would be to get rid of the massive tax cut bill the Republican Party passed in 2017, when it held the majority in both Houses of Congress after the 2016 election.

“The first thing we need to do is to repeal the 2017 $2 trillion tax cut,” said Williamson. “Eighty-three cents of every dollar went to the richest individuals and corporations. We need to close those rather hideous corporate loopholes. You had $26 billion given in one year alone to the fossil fuel companies.”

Williamson added she believes the U.S. government needs to learn to negotiate drug prices with major pharmaceutical companies, and that there should be 3% and 2% taxes placed on billionaires and on individuals who earn $500 million or more annually.

“This is an example, however, where the policies I just mentioned alone — which are pretty traditional progressive-left policies — as important as they are, will not of themselves fix [the economy] if there is not a concomitant recognition on the part of the American people of how rigged this system has become,” she added. “That is why, at the deepest level, our political problems will not be solved through only political solutions. They will be solved by moral and philosophical understanding.”

The Federal Reserve announced this week it will likely lower interest rates for the first time since the 2008 recession. Recently, national unemployment has been at a 50-year-low and wages have been gradually increasing after a brief stagnation.

Williamson noted that the current problems that led to vast wealth inequality in the U.S. have been going on for 40 years, and noted that governmental policies in recent years have done “more to advocate for short-term profits of huge, multinational corporations than it does to advocate for us, the American people.”

The self-help guru stressed that until we as a country attain an understanding of the causes behind today’s economic problems, we will never be able to fully solve them even if Trump is defeated in 2020.
