Health care is an issue that has dominated the discussion in the American political arena, especially with the 2020 election cycle having already begun.
Since President Donald Trump took office in January 2017, several courts have attempted to strike down Barack Obama‘s landmark Affordable Care Act but have failed to do so.
Marianne Williamson, a self-help author and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, spoke to uPolitics exclusively about her views on reforming healthcare.
“No changes in the healthcare system work unless there is this deep recognition on the part of the American people that healthcare should be seen — as it is in every other advanced democracy — as a right and not just a privilege,” said Williamson, echoing what other progressive 2020 Democratic presidential contenders like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) have long stressed.
“We should start with the public option and keep the [Obamacare] exchange and include that as an option and move to have government subsidies,” she added, saying people would be allowed to keep their insurance plans as part of her proposal.

Williamson added she hopes to be an “agent of fundamental change” as president, not an “agent of chaos.”
“There are a lot of progressive issues we want to work on here,” she continued. “I don’t want to go down just on that one issue by taking things more shockingly than I believe they need to be taken.”
