Trump Calls Biden’s Broadband Access Law ‘Woke,’ ‘Racist’ & ‘Illegal’

President Donald Trump bashed the Digital Equity Act in a Truth Social post, calling to end a “racist” and “illegal” law enacted by the Biden Administration.

The measure is part of the previous administration’s $1 trillion infrastructure package.

The bill set aside $60 million in grants for states and territories struggling to gain the same access to high-speed internet and technology. Implementing the law would cost $2.5 billion, which is meant to minimize the digital divide in the US.

Trump argued that the $60 million in grants is unconstitutional. He called it a “woke handout based on race” and suggested terminating the program based on discrimination.

Trump has made ending diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) measures a major priority of his administration.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington), the original author of the Digital Equity Act, posted a response to Trump’s remarks on X.

“I wrote the Digital Equity Act to help close the digital divide in America—it’s about making sure seniors can get online and equipping every student in every classroom with the tools they need to succeed, whether that’s a hotspot to take home or a laptop.”

She went on to say, “It is absolutely insane that resources meant to help red and blue communities—everyone from local school districts and libraries to workforce training programs and Tribes—close the digital divide will be illegally blocked because the President doesn’t like the word equity.”

Trump cannot repeal the law without Congress’s approval.

Still, states like Texas and California have frozen their digital equity funds in anticipation of Trump’s opposition to the law.
