Trump Most Distrusted World Leader, Scores Lower Than Putin & Xi, According To Pew Poll

A new Pew Research poll depicts President Donald Trump as the most distrusted world leader compared to Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping, France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Angela Merkel. Trump leads the poll with 64% of participants choosing “no confidence.”  

The poll surveyed participants in 30 countries. They concluded that, out of the five leaders, Trump was least trusted to do the right thing in world affairs. 

The report said,  “As has been the case throughout his presidency, U.S. President Donald Trump receives largely negative reviews from publics around the world.”

His unpopularity can in most part be in part because of his policies. Survey takers noted that they didn’t approve of his pulling out of the nuclear deal with Iran, his pulling out of several climate treaties, and his campaign promise to build a wall along the southern border of the United States. His only policy that survey takers seemed to approve of his foreign policies on North Korea: 41 percent said they agreed with this compared with 36 percent who didn’t. 

Out of the five world leaders, Merkel was the most trusted with only 29% of participants stating they had no confidence in her ability to respond well to world affairs and 46 percent of respondents saying they had confidence in her. She was followed by France’s Macron. 

Trust in Trump was the lowest in Mexico with only 8% having trust in him. His support was highest in  the Philippines (77 percent), Israel (71 percent), Kenya (65 percent), Nigeria (58 percent), India (56 percent) and Poland (51 percent).

Even though Trump’s approval is low worldwide, the poll noted that the U.S. as a country still has a higher approval rating. However, Pew did make it a point to point out that the U.S.’s popularity as a country has decreased since Trump took office.
