Poll Respondents Say Jan. 6 Rioters Shouldn’t Be Pardoned

According to Wednesday’s Morning Consult-Politico poll, over two-thirds of voters do not want last year’s Jan. 6 rioters to be pardoned.

Sixty-eight percent felt that rioters should not be pardoned. Twenty percent of those who participated in the survey said that the rioters should be pardoned while 12 percent held neutral opinions.

Former President Donald Trump said that if he won another term in the White House in 2024, he would consider pardoning rioters involved with the attack on the Capitol.

“If I run and if I win, we will treat those people from Jan. 6 fairly. And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons,” Trump said at a rally in Texas late last month. “They are being treated so unfairly.”

So far, over 725 people have been charged for their involvement and 165 have pled guilty. Trump has not yet officially announced a bid for a second term in 2024, but he did state at the rally, “We are going to take back the White House” in 2024.

Fifty-three percent of poll participants who said they voted for Trump in 2020 said that they did not support his pardoning of Capitol attackers.

If Trump were to win another term, it is already clear that some big-name Republicans would not support the pardoning of Capitol rioters.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) told CBS’ Face the Nation that Trump’s suggestion was “inappropriate.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) agreed.

“I would not be in favor of shortening any of the sentences for any of the people who pleaded guilty to crimes,” he said.
