In the last special election before the November midterms, Democrat Danny O’Connor trails Republican Troy Balderson by just one point in a deep-red Republican district in Ohio that President Donald Trump carried by seven points in 2016. The result, a statistical dead heat, shows that O’Connor is running a strong campaign in the type of predominantly white working-class area which Trump steamrolled over Hillary Clinton in. A Democrat has not held that seat since 1980. The special election will take place next Tuesday, August 7.
