Nearly Half Of Americans Want Trump Charged With A Crime For Mar-a-Lago Documents

Nearly half of those polled in a new NPR-PBS NewsHour-Marist survey indicated that they thought former President Donald Trump took part in illegal or unethical actions and should be charged after the FBI found classified White House documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence.

The poll was conducted between August 29 and September 1 on 1,236 adults.

Forty-four percent of those surveyed said they thought Trump’s actions were illegal, but 17 percent said his actions were most likely unethical, but not illegal. Twenty-nine percent of respondents said that they thought Trump didn’t do anything wrong at all.

The numbers showed a large gap when comparing Democrats to Republicans. An overwhelming number of Republicans, 63 percent to be exact, said that Trump probably did nothing illegal or unethical. Just five percent of right-leaning individuals called Trump’s actions illegal.

The survey went on to gauge society’s feelings about a possible Trump candidacy for the White House in 2024.

Around 61 percent said they would rather not have Trump as an option on the ballot in two years. As expected, 90 percent of Democrats don’t want Trump to run. That number drops to 26 percent amongst Republican voters with 67 percent of Independents against another Trump run.

Factoring in the ongoing investigations against Trump, 65% of respondents say Trump should not run again if he is charged with a crime. Republicans remain mostly favorable toward Trump, with 61% saying he should still run if he is convicted.
