A new CNN Poll conducted by SSRS, an independent research company, came back with results from January 10 through February 6 on the 2024 Presidential race.

The biggest takeaway from the poll was that a large number of Democrats and Republicans hope to see their party present nominees who are not President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump.

45% of left-leaning voters said they would be happy if their party renominated Biden for a second term in the White House, but 51% said they hoped to be able to support a different candidate for the presidency. Numbers were similar on the Republican side with 50% of those polled saying they wanted their party to nominate Trump again. 49% want the Republican party to nominate someone else.

This year’s results are a stark contrast to past polls conducted around the same time in President Barak Obama and Trump’s administrations.

A March 2010 poll reported that 79% of Democratic voters wanted to see Obama renominated. In March 2018, 77% of right-leaning voters supported Trump for a second term.

Poll participants were then questioned on why they didn’t want Trump or Biden to be their party’s nominee and it boiled down to voters’ perspectives on their electability.

Biden’s age proved to be a concern for some. He will turn 82 in November 2024. An additional concern among Democrats is Biden’s ability to beat a Republican candidate. On the Republican side, answers were less direct. Thirty-nine percent said they just didn’t want to see him as President again. The next highest answer came in at 22%, with people saying that they wanted someone new because they didn’t think Trump could beat a Democrat candidate.

Finally, 58% of people said that they were looking forward to the 2024 election. The number is deeply divided along partisan lines. 81% of Conservative-aligned voters are looking forward to it, while just 44% of Democrats are anticipating the election.
