57% Of Americans Want Trump Removed From Office Following Capitol Riot

The majority of Americans want President Donald Trump to be immediately removed from office, following his incitement of a rally at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday that left five dead.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted Thursday and Friday, 57% of Americans want Trump out of office ahead of Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, when Democratic President-elect Joe Biden will take over.

The support for Trump’s removal falls largely along party lines, with nine out ten Democrats polled supporting removal compared to only two in ten Republicans.

The results come in the wake of the violence at the Capitol, which has prompted Democratic lawmakers and a handful of Republicans to publicly support Trump’s removal in some capacity — either by impeachment, through the 25th Amendment or resignation.

Of those surveyed, 30% said Trump should be removed via the 25th Amendment, which allows the majority of his Cabinet to vote to discharge him of his presidential duties. Fourteen percent said Congress should impeach and remove him, and 13% said he should just resign.

The poll found that the vast majority (70%) of Americans disapprove of Trump’s actions leading up to the Wednesday riot, including his use of incendiary language that resulted in him being banned from Twitter.

Similarly, 79% of those surveyed disapproved of the events at the Capitol, calling the protesters either “criminals” or “fools.” The events have been widely condemned by lawmakers and Trump supporters alike.

However, a small minority — 12% — said they supported the protesters’ actions. Nine percent viewed them as “concerned citizens,” and 5% labeled the participants “patriots.”

A small minority of the American public — 12% — said they supported the actions of those people who took part in the riot.

The poll surveyed 1,005 American adults, including 339 who voted for Trump. Its margin of error is +/-4%.
