The majority of voters support the House’s decision impeach President Donald Trump, according to a poll conducted after the floor vote by Morning Consult/Politico.

The political parties are sharply divided on the issue of impeachment, as the majority of supporters identify as democrats. Among Democrats, 85% approve of the House’s impeachment, while only 12% disapprove.

The vast majority of Republicans (81%) disapprove of the impeachment, and only 16% support.

Among independents, 48 percent approve of the House passing articles of impeachment and 41 percent disapprove.

The Dec. 19-20 poll also found that the majority of voters believe the Senate should call additional witnesses during the impeachment trial.

Fifty-four percent of voters said the Senate should call additional witnesses, compared to the 27% who believe that is unnecessary because the relevant testimony and evidence was already revealed during the House Intelligence Committee’s hearings. The majority of Democrats want more witnesses, while Republican and independent voters are split.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) has pushed for a speedy trial and has indicated he will not call extra witnesses. The Democrats have requested that John Bolton and Mick Mulvaney be subpoenaed to testify, but McConnell rejected those demands last Tuesday.

Trump has also called for more witnesses, including Hunter Biden, Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-California) and the whistleblower whose complaint sparked the impeachment. However, other Republican senators have warned that this would only complicate proceedings.

“I think people are starting to realize that that would be a pretty messy and unproductive process,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) said about Trump’s witness proposal.

The poll surveyed 1,387 people and has a margin of error of +/-3%.
