50% Of Americans Oppose Overturning Roe V. Wade, New Poll Finds

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll revealed that half of all voters believe that Roe v. Wade should not be overturned trumping the 28 percent who think it should be overturned.

The poll was conducted on Tuesday following Monday night publication of a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, indicating the court had voted to overturn the landmark case that federally legalized abortion across the country. If the final decision reflects the draft opinion, abortion regulation will return to each individual state to decide what will be legal. Nearly two thousand registered voters participated in the poll.

Twenty-two percent of voters are still undecided.

Sixty-eight percent of Democrats, 52 percent of Independents and 49 percent of Republicans said Roe v. Wade should not be overturned.

Forty-seven percent of participants said abortion should be legal, with 21 percent claiming it should be illegal and 19 percent arguing that leaving it up to states to decide is best.

While the majority of voters indicate that they don’t want all abortion rights to be stripped, the majority is also open to limits on abortion. Thirty-one percent of voters said abortion should be legal in most cases, while 25 percent said it should be legal in all cases. Eleven percent felt that abortion should be illegal no matter what.
