Trump claims he knew Roy Moore would lose Alabama Senate election (Dec. 13, 2017)
Democrat Doug Jones narrowly defeated Republican Roy Moore, a former judge, in the Alabama special Senate election on Dec. 12 to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Trump had been excoriating Jones for weeks and supporting Moore despite a slew of accusations against him from women who claim Moore sexually harassed them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. The President seemed confident Moore would win the race.
However, not many people were surprised when Trump refused to admit he was wrong in any way and claimed he knew Moore would lose, and that’s why he initially backed Luther Strange, another Republican, in the primary and runoff in August and September 2017.
Trump congratulated Jones — the first Democratic Senator to be elected in Alabama in 25 years — in a separate tweet, in which he vowed Republicans would retake that seat in the state soon.
