Who Is Alabama Sen. Katie Britt, Who Gave Much-Mocked State Of The Union Address Response?

Alabama Sen. Katie Britt delivered the much-maligned Republican response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on March 7.

Britt’s odd delivery and use of a misleading story about sex trafficking was even mocked on Saturday Night Live. She earned a lot of attention but probably not the kind she was hoping for.

Britt was sworn into office last year and became the first woman to represent the state of Alabama in the upper legislative chamber. She also became the youngest Republican woman ever elected to the Senate, all while being the only mom with school age children.

Since being elected, Britt won a seat in the Senate Appropriations Committee and serves in the Security Appropriations subcommittee, which oversees the southern border.

Britt was one of the last members of Alabama’s delegation to endorse Trump in the 2024 Republican primary. Britt’s own campaign for office was endorsed by the former president, and she has expressed strong disdain for Biden before her speech. Britt cited inflation and border security issues as reasons for endorsing Trump.

Britt earned a political science degree from the University of Alabama. In 2018, she was elected CEO and president of the Business Council of Alabama. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she launched an initiative, Keep Alabama Open, which strongly opposed calls for a nationwide shut down.

While some Republicans hoped Britt could become the new face of the Republican Party, her very public fail has caused many to compare her to another trailblazing Republican woman – Sarah Palin.
