White House Fenced Off Due To George Floyd Protestors

Additional fencing is being erected around the White House after days of peaceful protesting in Lafayette Square.

As early as 5:30 a.m. ET Thursday, reports and images of new black fencing along the Eisenhower Executive Office Building entrance surfaced.

By Thursday afternoon, black fencing completely closed off the entrance to the Ellipse and stretched up to 17th Street.

Peaceful protesters have confronted Secret Service members and police as they demanded racial justice reforms in front of the White House. But President Donald Trump has largely shielded himself from the protests, hiding in an underground bunker and shutting off the lights of the White House.

The Secret Service told NBC “the closures are in an effort to maintain the necessary security measures surrounding the White House complex, while also allowing for peaceful demonstration.” The closures would remain in effect until Wednesday, they said.

The fencing has caused people to joke and reference the U.S.-Mexico border wall Trump promised to build in 2016.

“He finally built the wall,” tweeted Susan Glasser of the New Yorker.

Former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci weighed in as well.

“If Trump erected more than 3 miles of fence around the White House, it would exceed the length of his new wall on the southern border,” he tweeted. “His bigotry is only exceeded by his incompetence.”
