The Senate narrowly confirmed Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense on Friday, Jan. 24, after a tie-breaking vote from Vice President JD Vance tilted it 51-50 in favor of the television host and army veteran. It was just the second time in Senate history that a vice president was called upon to break a tie on a Cabinet nominee vote – the first being in 2017 when Mike Pence cast the deciding vote backing Trump’s pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos.
