French President Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump revived their habit of awkward handshakes in Paris on Dec. 7, as the U.S. president-elect visited the city for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral.
The pair had a 25-second “farewell” handshake in Paris in July 2017, while earlier in the same year, Macron seemed determined to outlast Trump, for whom power handshakes were a theme during his first term.
This time, press footage showed another prolonged handholding as Trump arrived at the Elysee Palace.
Video from Margo Martin, deputy director of communications for Trump, shows the pair in another handshake soon after, this time with Trump reaching over Macron’s hand at an unusual angle.
Trump previously attacked Macron for his “nasty comments” about NATO.
