VIDEO: Transgender Activist Confronts GOP Rep. Nancy Mace At D.C. Summit

A prominent transgender-rights activist disrupted a talk involving Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 21, after Mace complained about the criticism she received over her strongly anti-trans positions.

The incident happened during the Project Liberty “Summit on the Future of the Internet” at Georgetown University. Mace was speaking on a panel alongside Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) and radio host Charlamagne Tha God at an event called “At a Digital Crossroads: Bipartisan Tech Solutions to Unite.”

Sitting in the audience was Evan Greer, who is the director of Fight For The Future, a nonprofit that advocates for freedoms online, and a transgender activist. In response to Mace’s remarks, Greer rose from her seat, unfurled an LGBTQ pride flag, and criticized the South Carolina Republican for her attacks on the trans community.

“This is ridiculous. It is the day after Trans Day of Visibility. We had dozens of trans people die this year because of the hate and lies that you are spreading,” said Greer, while being pushed out of the venue by security. “Are we building an Internet with free speech and safety for all people? Or just the privileged few?” she asked, prompting applause from members of the audience.

As Greer was ejected, Mace replied and misgendered Greer, who goes by female pronouns. “God loves him, I love him, but his p—- isn’t gonna be in my bathroom,” said Mace, prompting boos from the audience.

Her fellow panelist, Khanna, then expressed his “profound disagreement” with Mace on the issue of transgender rights, saying he believed transgender people should be treated with “dignity and fairness.”

Mace replied by saying transgender women were “men” who had “mental illness.”

“I’m not going to allow you or any other man to erase women, period,” she said.

The debate between Mace and Khanna continued for a couple of minutes before returning to the topic of the internet.

Mace dominated headlines in the days before the summit after introducing a resolution explicitly targeting transgender Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-Delaware) that would ban transgender women from using women’s restrooms in the Capitol.

Mace also posted about the issue on social media more than 300 times over a 72-hour period from Nov. 18 to 21, according to an analysis by Newsweek.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is marked on Nov. 20 and honors Rita Hester, a trans woman who was killed in Massachusetts. Transgender Day of Visibility is on March 31.
