VIDEO: Iowans Crowd Capitol To Protest Vote To Remove Transgender Protections From Civil Rights Act
Protesters rallied inside the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines on Thursday, ahead of a vote on a bill that would remove any mentions of gender identity from the state’s civil rights act. The move would effectively deny any protections for transgender and nonbinary people, and allow Iowans to deny people housing, jobs, services, credit or education based on their gender identity. Protesters filled the Iowa Capitol hallways, with a line of people snaking out the door. Footage showed protesters chanting, “Trans rights are human rights.” The bill passed the state House by a vote of 60-36. (Credit: Bryce Smith via Storyful)
